The Southern Pines Pro Shop

Your next round starts in here.

You might be here for a glove. You might have been thinking about a new set of irons since the last set did something you’re still upset about. Either way, come in. Have a look around. If you know what you’re after, we’ll point you towards it. If you don’t, tell us a little about your game and we’ll start there.

16 holes is a long way to regret your shoes.

This is the Pro Shop at Southern Pines. There’s a golf course outside, a person you can speak to and a reason to ask a few questions before putting something in your bag. You don’t need to know all the terminology. “My feet hurt by the twelfth” tells us rather more than you might think.

Find your shelf

Come in. Have a look around.

Start with the shelf that brought you in. Clubs, balls, something to wear, something to carry it all in. You can get into the finer details once you’ve found the right aisle. We wouldn’t greet you at the counter by tipping the entire stockroom onto the floor.

A person behind the counter

The internet has opinions. We have Doug.

There’s plenty of golf advice online. Some of it is excellent. Some of it seems to assume you practise six days a week and have a spare room for launch monitors. Doug is our Head Professional and one of the owners. You can start with the golf you actually play.

Tell the Pro Shop what’s in your bag, what you like about it and what’s getting on your nerves. Mention what you want to spend, too. It’s a useful part of the conversation. We can talk through the choices without turning a straightforward question into a lecture on shaft technology.

Give them the choice

They’ve mentioned a new club. Which one is another matter.

You listened. You even remembered the brand. Then you discovered there were several versions, different shafts and a surprisingly important question about which hand they play with. A gift card is a perfectly respectable point at which to stop investigating. They get to choose, and you still get the credit for knowing what they’d enjoy.
